With support from funding agencies such as DFID, EU and Comic Relief grass roots amalgamated to form their association. BasicNeeds’ work over the years has been towards supporting a broad based grass root user association of people with mental disorders or epilepsy and caregivers.
The association was born out of the desire of members to belong to an umbrella group that with one voice and the Strategic Grant set up the structures through which the user group, work for the welfare and common good of all its members towards addressing some of the issues that confront them both locally and nationally.
Membership is opened to all people with mental illness and/or epilepsy and primary care-givers and other credible individuals and bodies.
To ensure that MEHSOG eventually becomes an association run users and survivors of mental illness or epilepsy alone, with carers and other associated persons being affiliated members across the entire country, see to the welfare and common good of all its members and work towards addressing some of the issues that confront them locally and nationally.
To ensure that all people with mental illness and epilepsy, including people who have ever experienced mental illness and/or epilepsy in are represented in the association, co-operate with like-minded associations and bodies and with the Government of Ghana and advocate in pursuit of advancement of mental health.
